Right now is the best time for organic fruit with grapes, plums, banana, limes, blueberries and best of all - new season apples all available at the farm shop. Along with the beautiful veg coming out of Wagtail’s patch on the farm and the produce harvested fresh from George Wren’s farm in Karridale, the shop has a great range of organic fresh fruit and veg on offer right now.
Taking the Margaret River Organic Garden in town as inspiration, work has begun on our own mini version out the back of the shop with the first garden beds going in last week. It will take some time to emulate the lovely nooks and spaces that the organic garden has, but we’ve made a start. Next to go in will be the fruit trees, followed by a trellis and compost bays. The end goal is to have a garden that is welcoming and relaxing to spend time in, hopefully complementing the indoor space and it’s use by kids and community groups, as well as visitors to the farm.
Many thanks to Cowara Ag who threw in a bit extra when delivering compost the other day. This garden project is being put together on a shoestring budget and every little contribution is gratefully received. We’re on the hunt for plant cuttings, large garden pots (or half wine barrels) and fine gauge wire fencing to protect the garden from marauding bunnies and kangaroos. If you have any of these things lying around at your place, please let us know! They will be put to good use with the homeschool kids doing most of the work bringing the new garden together.
