Kambarang Produce: Beans, Leek, and More

Seasonal produce updates and herb arrivals for the cafe

Assorted fresh produce spread on a wooden table, including leafy greens, celery, leeks, zucchini, avocados, carrots, onions, radishes, sweet potatoes, a halved pumpkin, and a purple cabbage. Bunches of bananas and several citrus fruits are clustered along the bottom, with some greens in a clear plastic bag.

With this glorious Kambarang weather the variety of seasonal produce is steadily increasing and we’ve made it through the sparse times for another year. Broad beans, leek and kohl rabi are becoming more readily available and early summer produce like cucumber and zucchini are starting to come on, early harbingers of the summer glut that is to come. Fruit is still hard to come by and will be until stone fruit and berries are in season, usually becoming consistent by the end of November and early December.

Pictured here is the contents of our large fruit and veg box last week. All organic, what goes into the boxes is only decided that morning once we can see what is ready from Sally and Patrick’s garden and from what arrives from other local producers. There were 20 different types of fruit and veg in this particular box, which was a mix of staples like carrot, onion and banana as well as greens, salady things and other veg that is changed each week.

Woven basket filled with green, knobbly custard apples on a wooden table, with three more custard apples in front. A grassy outdoor area is blurred in the background.

These custard apples walked out the door almost as soon as they arrived this week. Locally grown and organic, it’s always a delight to see the look on those faces who see something they love that’s usually hard to find. Hopefully another delivery will be arriving this week.

A hand holds two bundled bunches of fresh herbs: one with small white flowers and one with purple flower spikes and broad green leaves. Behind them is a grassy field with fence posts under a dark, cloudy sky.

More photos of more herbs coming up from Wagtail’s Garden. It has been such a luxury to have these ingredients on hand for the cafe. Thanks Sally!
