Autumn Crops Begin as Summer Fades

Explore farm updates and seasonal produce shifts.

Two alpacas stand in a dry grassy paddock, one brown alpaca close to the camera and a black-and-white alpaca beside it. A wire fence and trees line the background, with several alpacas lying down farther back.

Maple and Aspen are definitely getting more used to people! They came right up to us the other day with their big eyes and woolly coats, although the goats still aren’t sure what to make of them and take off if they get too close.

With the goats and alpacas on one side, the cows wandering the vineyard on the other and the garden to the rear, there’s a lot to see at Footsteps Farm at the moment. You may have noticed the lack of Marri blossom this year, which means black cockatoos have shifted their attention to vineyards, which is terrible for vintage but otherwise lovely to have them around. Most early mornings and late afternoons you can find a decent flock moving between the garden, the Marri trees out the front and the vineyard on the farm, getting up to all their usual cockatoo shenanigans.

In Wagtail’s Garden the season is definitely shifting, with cucumber, zucchini and tomato winding down and plants being removed, getting ready for autumn crops and some rest time for Sally and Patrick. They are still harvesting a few days a week for the farm shop, and their produce along with what comes from George Wren is making up the bulk of what’s available at the moment. This means very low to non-existent food miles and super fresh veg. There’s also organic grapes, apples and melons from Perth as well as bananas from Carnarvon and the last of the organic garlic from Witchcliffe, so stock up while you can!

Two black cows stand in front of a dense green leafy hedge, with the nearer cow facing the camera and a pink ear tag visible. The other cow stands behind it, partly turned away.

Close-up of several fresh broccoli heads with long green stems and leafy greens. The broccoli fills the frame with a few water droplets visible on the surface.

A sunlit cornfield with tall green stalks and tassels fills the foreground. Trees and a clear blue sky form the background.
